All about Two Wheeler Insurance

So stay informed about bike insurance

What is Bike Insurance?

Bike insurance technically known as two-wheeler insurance is an insurance policy which covers your bike against damages due to accident, fire, man-made or natural disasters and theft. It is an ideal tool to protect yourself against financial losses that might arise in future due to unfortunate events. Bike insurance also covers bike-related third-party liabilities that may arise due to damages caused to third-party vehicle, property or physical injury. Two-wheeler insurance or bike insurance covers scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, etc.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, every vehicle should compulsorily have Third Party Liability Insurance. Third Party Liability Insurance covers third-party damages caused to the property or the person. While Third Party Liability Insurance is mandatory as per law, buying own-damage insurance is also necessary. Own-damage bike insurance covers damages caused by man-made and natural calamities, accidents and theft. Both the third-party and own-damages can be brought either separately or under a single policy known as a comprehensive bike insurance policy. New two-wheelers are now mandatorily required to have 5-year Third Party Liability Insurance cover as per the law.

Kotak General Insurance offers Kotak Long-Term Two-wheeler Secure policy in two variants: as comprehensive policy and as liability only policy offering mandatory third-party liabilities for a tenure of 5 years. It also offers Kotak Two-wheeler Protect OD-only policy for individuals who already have a third-party liability policy and want to buy their own damages policy. Kotak Long Term Two-wheeler Secure policy can further be clubbed with optional add-ons to boost its coverage and make it more comprehensive thereby providing all round coverage from all the bike-related liabilities. Know more factors other than premium when purchasing two wheeler insurance.

Why do you need a Bike Insurance Policy?

A bike insurance policy provides financial protection and saves your out-of-pocket expenses in case of third-party legal liabilities and/or any damages caused to your bike due to an accident. It is like a safeguard from financial distress in the event of any mishap or unfortunate event involving your bike. Some of the advantages of having a bike insurance or scooter insurance policy are discussed below:

  • Mandatory

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory under The Motor Vehicles Act, of 1988 and every owner of the bike must buy the mandatory third-party liability policy or else they would be subjected to legal actions. Hence, you need a bike insurance policy to fulfil the legal requirement and to avoid penalties.

  • Cover against natural and man-made calamities

A comprehensive two-wheeler insurance policy covers natural and manmade calamities that might result in significant repair costs or total loss of your bike. You can get coverage and financial protection against such disasters under bike insurance.

  • Cover against third-party damage

Bikes are prone to accidents in comparison to cars. Your bike might injure a third party or damage their property thereby raising legal third-party liabilities. Such third-party liability may drain you financially in the absence of a bike insurance policy. You will get coverage up to the legal liability for claims related to bodily injury, death or property damage as per the governed rules and regulations of Motor Vehicle Act

  • Cover for thefts of your bike

A bike insurance policy covers you if your bike has been stolen or lost and gives a lump sum financial compensation for the same. This can help you to buy a new bike for your conveyance needs. Know more about the surprising things covered by motor insurance.

  • Opt for a comprehensive policy

The ratio denotes the proportion of claims that the insurance company settled v/s the total claims made in it. Check the CSR of the insurer and choose a company that has a high ratio.

How is Bike Insurance premium calculated

When buying a bike insurance policy, most of you wonder how much premium would you have to pay for the coverage. This is where the two-wheeler insurance premium calculator comes into the picture.

A bike insurance calculator is an online tool that helps you ascertain the exact premium of your two-wheeler insurance policy. The calculator takes into account the factors affecting your two wheeler insurance premium and then works out the premium that you have to pay.

Kotak offers an instant and simple bike insurance calculator using which you can calculate your premium. Here’s how to use the calculator –

  • Visit https://www.kotakgeneral.com/ and choose ‘Bike Insurance’

  • The bike insurance page will open wherein you can click on ‘Get a Quick Quote’

  • To get the quote, you will have to enter the details of your bike and the coverage that you seek. The calculator uses these details to calculate the premium. Here’s how the bike insurance calculator uses your details and how it calculates the premium –

    Details requiredHow is premium calculated?
Make, model and variant of the bikeThese factors determine the market value of the bike which determines the coverage level.
IDV selectedYou can choose your IDV which is the maximum coverage that you can avail of. Based on this coverage the premium is calculated.
Type of policyYou can pick from the different types of bike insurance plans offered by Kotak based on which the premium would be calculated
Add-ons selectedThe add-ons add to the premium component and increase the total outgo
Registration dateThis determines the age of the bike to calculate its depreciated value
Registration locationPremiums are classified based on the city where the bike is registered
Existing No Claim Bonus, if any If you are renewing your bike insurance policy and have accumulated a no claim bonus by making no claims, you can use the bonus and claim a premium discount
Other available discountsWhen choosing the comprehensive bike insurance policy, you can avail of different types of premium discounts. These discounts can be claimed to reduce the premium outgo
Claim historyClaim history helps the bike insurance calculator assess the no claim bonus that you are eligible for and calculate the premium accordingly
Lapse history If you are renewing a lapsed bike insurance policy, the premium might be higher. The calculator takes into consideration the lapsed coverage when calculating the premium
The policy termDepending on the term of the policy, the bike insurance calculator would show the premium.

Thus, the premium is calculated using the above factors and you can check the required outgo for the bike insurance policy. You can also make changes to the coverage details, like the add-ons selected or the term of the policy, and the bike insurance calculator would show the updated premium. Once you find the premium, you can proceed to buy the bike insurance policy online in a few simple steps.

Factors affecting Two-Wheeler Insurance premium

The premium for a two-wheeler insurance policy depends on a multitude of factors. The bike insurance calculator uses these factors when calculating the premium of the policy. Here are the factors that affect two wheeler insurance premium –

  • Make and model of the bike

The make and model of the bike determines its market value. This market value is used to calculate the coverage level of the bike. Premium bikes have higher market values and so their premiums are also high compared to entry-level or cost-effective bikes.

  • Fuel variant

Bikes are either offered in petrol variant or electric variant. Electric bikes are costlier compared to fuel engines and so, the premiums for electric bikes are higher.

  • Type of policy

Third-party coverage is the bare essential for your bike to cover the mandatory laws. The premium for this coverage is determined by the Insurance and Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI). The premium is low and depends on the cubic capacity of the bike’s engine. On the other hand, comprehensive plans offer a wider scope of coverage and provide own damage cover too. They, thus, include third party premiums and own damage premiums. Depending on which policy you choose, the premium would be determined. Third-party liability plans have low premiums compared to comprehensive ones.

  • Coverage tenure

Bike insurance plans can be availed as annual plans or long-term plans. Moreover, the third party coverage on a new bike is allowed for five years. The premium, thus, depends on the coverage tenure that you choose. Short-term plans would have lower premiums compared to long-term plans that take the aggregate premium in one go. However, in calculation, long-term plans can prove more cost-effective as you can claim long-term premium discounts.

  • Add-ons selected

Each add-on comes with an additional premium. So, for the add-ons selected you pay an additional premium which enhances the overall premium outlay.

  • Registration date and location

Registration date determines the age of the bike. Older the bike, the lower would be the premium payable. Registration location is important since premiums are higher in Tier 1 cities. Moreover, premiums reduce as tiers increase.

  • IDV selected

The IDV determines the maximum coverage liability of the insurance company. That is why higher IDV attracts a higher premium and vice-versa.

  • Discounts availed

If you avail discounts for no claim bonus, for being a member of Automobiles Association of India, for choosing a voluntary deductible, etc., the premium would be lower.

  • Policy continuity

Renewing active two-wheeler insurance policies attracts lower premium compared to renewing lapsed policies.

How to save on Bike Insurance Premium

There are different ways to save bike insurance premium. Have a look at them –

  • Choose a suitable policy

Choose a suitable policy when buying bike insurance. While a comprehensive plan makes sense for a new bike, you can opt for a third-party liability cover for a bike which is very old and is not used much.

  • Choose only the required add-ons

Kotak offers a range of add-ons for your bike insurance policy. Since each add-on comes at an additional premium, you should choose only those add-ons which are required.

  • Renew on time

Always renew your policy on time since bike insurance premiums are lower for on-time renewals compared to lapsed policies.

  • Claim no claim bonus

If you are renewing your policy, look for the accumulated no claim bonus that you have. Use this bonus and claim a discount on the own damage premium to bring down the cost.

  • Look for discounts

Besides the no claim discount, there are different other discounts that comprehensive bike insurance plans offer. These discounts can also lower your bike insurance premium and help you save. For instance, installing safety devices, being a member of AAI, choosing a voluntary deductible, etc. are some aspects that can help you earn a discount and save on bike insurance premium.

  • Buy a long-term policy

Kotak offers long-term bike insurance plans. These plans not only cut down the hassles of annual renewals but they also prove cost-effective. So, opt for long-term plans and save bike insurance premium. Get effective tips to reduce bike insurance premium.
