In 2014, the Indian delegation suggested the United Nations to mark 21st June as International Yoga Day. This resolution was well received by the leaders of the world. It is difficult for any philosophy to sustain the test of times. But yoga has gained noteworthy reputation in recent times. The recognition by the United Nations helped further the credibility in the practice of yoga.

Yoga is not just about working out, it is about a healthy lifestyle. Yoga practices like deep breathing and meditation help in handling financial concerns, relationship issues and anxiety troubles in a nonchalant way. Yoga helps you to clear the mind, relieve stress and focus better.

One of the benefits of yoga is that it can be customized to your requirement. You can choose a yoga style that is tailored to your lifestyle- power yoga, vinyasa yoga, ashtanga yoga, etc. You can choose to practice yoga at your home, in the gym or studio, there is a wide variety of options available depending on your objective.

Some of the benefits of yoga are listed below to help you find the motivation to start practicing yoga now!

  • Improves your flexibility

Yoga improves your body’s flexibility. In the beginning, you might not be able to touch your toes. But the key is to stick to your routine. You will notice a gradual loosening of muscles and joints. The postures and asanas that seemed impossible would be doable.

  • Builds Muscle strength

Strong muscles do more than just enhancing your cosmetic look. They protect you from certain conditions like back pain and arthritis. They help you maintain a robust posture. Yoga helps to build your muscles with the added advantage of flexibility. Lifting weights only might build your strength but may compromise your flexibility

  • Improves your posture

An erect spine helps balance the big, round and heavy head. An erect spine demands lesser work from your neck and back muscles. The head, if held a several inches forward would strain your muscles. To sustain this for long hours during the day would make you tired. Shoulder, back, neck and other muscles would suffer due to poor posture

  • Increases lubrication of joints

Whenever you practice yoga, the joints are taken through their full range of motion. This helps in utilizing the cartilage that are normally not used. Joint cartilage gets its fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out making way for new supply. Just like a worn out brake pad, your bone would be exposed if the cartilage is neglected and not sustained.

  • Complete detoxification

Yoga ensures the blood is supplied to various parts of the body. This helps in flushing out the toxins from the body. It also ensure that nourishment is provided to every part of the body. This leads to an improvement in the energy levels to help you face life with a remarkable zest.

These benefits of yoga are just “side effects”. What it actually achieves is the synchronization of the mind and the body. It helps in strengthening the will of the mind and help you achieve feats that you thought were impossible once.
